What is Aluminium (ALU)?

Aluminium (symbol Al, ticker ALU) is the most abundant metal in the Earth's crust and the second most widely used metal after iron and steel. It is lightweight, corrosion-resistant, highly recyclable and an excellent conductor of electricity.

Aluminium is traded on the London Metal Exchange (LME), priced per metric ton in USD. China produces approximately 60% of global aluminium supply. In Pakistan, aluminium scrap is widely traded in Karachi's SITE and Korangi industrial areas.

A key fact: recycling aluminium uses 95% less energy than producing it from bauxite ore — making secondary (scrap) aluminium an extremely valuable and sustainable commodity.

What Factors Affect the Aluminium Price?

>Understanding key price drivers helps investors, traders and industry professionals make informed decisions.

Energy Costs & Smelter Economics

Aluminium smelting requires ~14 megawatt-hours of electricity per ton. High electricity prices lead to smelter curtailments, reducing supply and supporting aluminium prices.

China's Production Policy

China produces ~60% of global aluminium. Chinese energy policy, environmental production caps and government quotas are the dominant supply-side price factors.

Aerospace & EV Demand

Growing aerospace production rates and EV manufacturers replacing heavier steel components with aluminium are structural long-term demand drivers.

US Dollar Movements

LME aluminium is dollar-denominated. Currency movements affect pricing for non-USD buyers and therefore overall international demand levels.

Scrap & Secondary Supply

Aluminium is infinitely recyclable without quality loss. Growing secondary aluminium supply competes with primary production, particularly as energy costs make recycling more attractive.

LME Inventory Signals

LME aluminium warehouse stocks are a key supply-demand indicator. Falling inventories signal potential upside; rising stocks typically pressure prices lower.

Frequently Asked Questions — Aluminium Price

Aluminium extrusion scrap (6063 alloy) in Karachi typically fetches approximately 12–16% of the LME price per kg, after USD/PKR conversion, purity adjustment and local dealer margins. Cast aluminium and mixed grades command lower rates. See the metals hub page for indicative PKR scrap rates.

Recycling aluminium uses only 5% of the energy required to smelt it from bauxite ore. A recycled aluminium beverage can uses just 5% of the energy of a new one. This exceptional energy efficiency makes aluminium central to circular economy and sustainability goals globally.

Primary aluminium is smelted from bauxite ore via electrolytic reduction — extremely energy-intensive (~14 MWh/ton). Secondary (recycled) aluminium is melted from scrap — requiring only ~0.7 MWh/ton. Both produce equivalent quality metal when properly processed to specification.

Smelting aluminium requires approximately 14 megawatt-hours of electricity per metric ton. When electricity prices spike — as in Europe during 2022 — smelters reduce or halt production to avoid losses, tightening global supply and pushing aluminium prices higher globally.
