Lead (symbol Pb, ticker LEAD) is a dense, soft, bluish-grey metal with the highest recycling rate of any widely used metal globally — approximately 85% of all lead produced is eventually recycled. Known locally in Pakistan as Seesa.
Approximately 85% of lead demand comes from lead-acid batteries — used in vehicle starter batteries, industrial UPS backup power systems and energy storage.
Lead is traded on the London Metal Exchange (LME), priced per metric ton in USD. Its price is strongly linked to global automotive production, vehicle replacement cycles and battery backup power infrastructure.
Understanding key price drivers helps investors, traders and industry professionals make informed decisions.
The automotive sector drives ~80% of lead demand through vehicle starter batteries. Global vehicle production levels and replacement battery cycles are the dominant demand factors.
Lead has an ~85% recycling rate. Secondary (recycled) lead from spent batteries dominates global supply. Higher lead prices incentivize more battery collection and recycling, increasing secondary supply.
EVs use lithium-ion traction batteries instead of lead-acid. However, EVs still require a 12V lead-acid auxiliary battery. Full EV transition would reduce but not eliminate lead automotive demand.
Growing vehicle ownership in South Asia, Africa and Southeast Asia supports continued lead-acid battery demand in markets where EV adoption is slower than in developed countries.
Data centers, telecom towers, hospitals and industrial facilities globally rely on lead-acid UPS backup systems. This non-automotive demand provides a stable, growing base for lead.
LME lead is dollar-denominated. Currency movements affect import costs and purchasing decisions for non-USD countries including Pakistan.

Lead battery scrap (soft lead plates) in Pakistan typically fetches approximately 8–10% of the LME price per kg after USD/PKR conversion, purity adjustment and dealer margins. Clean battery plates command higher rates than mixed lead scrap. See the metals hub for indicative PKR rates.
Lead-acid battery recycling is highly economical — both lead plates and battery acid are fully recoverable and valuable. The established collection infrastructure through mechanics, battery shops and kabari dealers makes the recycling supply chain extremely efficient, resulting in the highest recycling rate of any major industrial metal.
EVs eliminate the need for lead-acid traction batteries but still require a 12V lead-acid auxiliary battery for lights, electronics and infotainment systems. Additionally, growing UPS/data center demand and off-grid renewable energy storage partially offset automotive demand decline. The overall transition impact on lead will be gradual.
Lead is toxic — prolonged exposure, ingestion or inhalation of lead dust or fumes is hazardous to health. Always wear protective gloves, avoid touching your face, wash hands thoroughly, and use respiratory protection when handling lead scrap. Battery acid is highly corrosive. Professional scrap dealers use appropriate safety equipment.
